About RABC
The Race Against Breast Cancer, Inc. (RABC) began in 1991 as a community coalition whose mission is to confront the challenge of breast cancer in Shawnee County. The coalition is a registered 501C (3) not-for-profit corporation and to date has provided over 3000 mammograms to women in need of financial assistance. A volunteer board of directors consisting of community representatives, medical providers and hospital representatives runs the corporation. These individuals are committed to the assurance that every woman, regardless of financial means, has access to this valuable, lifesaving screening.
The RABC program provides screening/diagnostic mammograms for over
300 women each year and reaches hundreds more through community awareness and fundraising efforts. Breast cancer impacts not only women, but also their families, friends, workplace, and community.
Income for the corporation is primarily generated through charitable contributions from corporations, businesses and individuals. An annual 5K Run/Walk is held each fall to raise funds for mammography services as well as to promote awareness of the program. All monies raised through the 5K Run/Walk and additional fund-raisers are restricted to mammography services. This program strives for community cooperation and resource sharing in meeting a critical unmet need for the medically underserved women in our community.
Since its inception in 1991, the Race Against Breast Cancer, Inc. has had agreements with the following medical providers in Shawnee County for guidance, support, and provision of breast cancer screening services: Stormont-Vail HealthCare; St. Francis
Health Center; Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, PA; the Marian Clinic; Topeka Shawnee County Health Agency; the American Cancer Society; and the Kansas Department of Health & Environment
(Early Detection Works).
These agencies donate considerable staff time and other professional services to the RABC program, including public relations, printing, office space, supplies, and administrative services. Additionally, the mammography providers in Shawnee County offer their services to the Race Against Breast Cancer at a significant discount.

Mission Statement
The Race Against Breast Cancer, Inc. (RABC) is a comprehensive breast cancer-screening program created for women who live or work in Shawnee County and six surrounding counties (Douglas, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee), and who are in need of financial assistance. Women meeting the American Cancer Society's guidelines for screening are eligible for:
- Education about breast cancer risks, early detection guidelines and breast self examination,
- A clinical breast exam; and
- A free screening/ diagnostic mammogram
The RABC serves working and nonworking women on limited incomes who may or may not have health insurance. If they are unable to pay for all or any part of the cost of a mammogram, the RABC program will help. Our efforts have resulted in breast cancers being detected at an early stage.
